Othonas Charalambous is a Cypriot visual artist whose practice explores how and when bodies become sites of resistance. Encompassing mediums including sculpture, installation, video and sound, his work oscillates around local biopolitics and spatiotemporal narratives traversing corporeal existence within hegemonic narratives, often unfolding through synergetic gestures across civil disobedience, environmental activism, and meticulous repurposings
of material traces sourced for their nuanced signifigance.
His ongoing sculptural practice explores discrepancies between inherited Cypriot identity and lived, embodied reality, juxtaposing elements such as symbols traced across the country’s history with materials sourced through their extensive use within queer sensibilities towards a language of fragmentation. Continuously alluding to nuanced relationships between identity and place, the sculpture series reconfigurations attests to a volatility of processes of shaping and being shaped through subversive exercises transforming the once familiar into reconfigured symbols of potentially meaningful new identities.
Charalambous has participated in residency programs including at Korai curated by Sean Elder (Nicosia, 2025) and Snehta curated by Ioanna Gerakidi (Athens, 2022), and his work is exhibited worldwide including at Stand in Line Gallery (2025), State Gallery of Contemporary Art (2023), CEAC (Xiamen, 2022), Het Nieuwe instituut (Rotterdam, 2021), Salone Degli Incanti (Trieste, 2018), among others. Alongside his practice, he has also co-organised and co-curated projects including etchings - Glavkos Koumides (2023), perceiving landscape(s) - International Association of Photography and Theory (2021) and platform: climate challenge - Visual Artists & Art Theorists Association (2018-2020).
